The komoot route planner on the website is the easiest way to create and review routes in detail. You can access the full-screen planner under Routes by using the + Plan new button.

komoot suggests a suitable route based on your selected sport and the available information, which you can adjust by adding waypoints. The blue line shows the planned route.

Start your route

You can use the left sidebar to define the basics of your route before adding waypoints to the map. This includes:

  • Sport type. The sports type you choose affects the paths komoot chooses for planning, such as favoring more paved roads for Road Cycling.
  • Route type preferences. They guide komoot in planning a route by prioritizing certain paths, but they don't guarantee that specific surfaces, climbs, or road types are entirely avoided.

Tip: If you select a cycling sport, you can optimize your route duration and difficulty estimates for e-bikes by enabling the E-bike toggle.

Start your route with two points

To start planning a route, you need to set two points on the map: a start point and a destination. Use the map as your main workspace by clicking on the points you'd like to add.

These are the first two waypoints of your route and can be moved or reordered later as you continue planning.

Tip: If you have a specific place in mind, like a Highlight or Saved place, you can also Search places to add waypoints.

Adjust the route structure

Once you've added at least two waypoints, additional route options will be displayed, including:

  • Completely reversing the waypoint order to change the route's direction.
  • Switching between a one-way route and a round trip.

Check out our Route direction and type article for more detailed information.

Shape your route

Add additional waypoints by clicking on the map or by searching for places. Drag the route line to refine it, and use the tools at the top to adjust your route and map content.

Manage waypoints

You can use waypoints to customize the route. Choose your own waypoints, add Highlights, or select any Place of Interest (such as parking, accommodation, public transport, swimming, parks, etc.).

  1. Add waypoints on the map: Click anywhere on the map and select Add to Route. The komoot route planner will automatically add and sort the new waypoint at the best possible spot on your route.
  2. Add waypoints manually: Add waypoints from the waypoint list. This creates a new waypoint right before the endpoint of your route, and you can use the input field to enter an address or a place.
  3. Reorder waypoints: Drag waypoints up or down to reorder them. You should display all waypoints before you can change their order.
  4. Delete waypoints: Hover over the waypoint in the planning menu to remove it, or select the waypoint on the map and select Remove.

Adjust your route with drag and drop

You can drag the route line anywhere to adjust your route and to create a new waypoint. You can also move existing waypoints via drag and drop.

Note: If the route you wish to use is not accepted or doesn't go in the desired direction, it's possible that it cannot be used via the sport you have chosen, cannot be used in your chosen direction, or accesses private property.

Editing tools

The editing tools at the top offer ways to adjust and review your route, including options that let you:

  • Make broader changes, such as cropping the route or removing multiple waypoints
  • Undo or redo recent edits
  • Temporarily hide the route line to get a clearer view of the map

Map content

Map content controls what you want to show on the map while you plan. This helps you focus on the information that's most relevant to the route you're working on.

  • Visible elements, such as Trail View photos, saved places, or distance markers
  • Highlights, which are community-recommended places or route sections
  • Places of Interest, including accommodations, natural sights, e-bike charging points, and other useful locations

Preferences

Planner preferences control how the planner behaves when you add waypoints, influencing how routes are created and adjusted on the map.

Review your route

Komoot offers several tools to help you review your route and understand key conditions along the way.

Route overview

As you plan, the sidebar also brings together information to help you understand what to expect and fine-tune your route.

  • Images along the route. These are community-sourced photos shared by other users along the route.
  • Route Alerts that may require your attention along the route
  • Additional route conditions such as elevation, way types, surfaces, weather and additional details.

The overview is updated automatically as you continue planning your route and making changes.

Tip: You can also view these details after you've saved the route.

Note: Route Alerts only appear when komoot detects relevant conditions along your route and may not be available for every route.

komoot Premium

Weather on route is a komoot Premium feature.

Elevation profile

To review route details as you plan, use the elevation profile at the bottom of the planner. It visualizes key information along your route, such as distance, estimated duration, difficulty, and adjustable speed.

By switching between different views, you can see how elevation, surfaces, way types, and weather conditions change from start to finish.

Tip: Interacting with the elevation profile highlights the corresponding section of the route on the map.

Save your route

Done planning? Make sure to save your route using the Save route button. Once saved, you'll be able to find this route in your Saved routes.
