Trail View helps you get a better sense of a route before heading out by showing real photos taken directly along the trail.

In addition to surface type information such as asphalt, gravel, or natural paths, Trail View lets you see what the trail actually looks like at specific locations. This can help you better judge whether a route matches your expectations.

Trail View on the map

On the web route planner, Trail View is shown on the map as green dots.

  • Trail View dots are not visible by default and need to be enabled in the map settings.
  • Each green dot represents a photo taken at that specific location along the trail.
  • Trail View can be used on all available map layers.

When you hover over or select a green dot, a preview of the trail photo is shown. Opening a dot displays the full photo and additional details in the sidebar.

Trail View in the mobile app

Trail View works differently in the mobile app than on the website. You can't view Trail View photos on the map while planning a route in the app. Trail View images are available only after a tour has been planned and saved.

To see Trail View photos for a saved tour in the app:

  1. Open the planned tour.
  2. Tap Photos at the top.
  3. Swipe the photo section from right to left to show the album options.
  4. Select the Trail View album to view the photos for that route.

Tip: If you want to use Trail View to decide during planning whether to follow a route, use the web route planner. There you can view and open the green Trail View dots along the map while planning.

Trail View photo eligibility

Trail View photos are automatically selected from the komoot community. To be eligible, certain conditions must be met.

Note: Meeting these criteria does not guarantee that a photo will appear in Trail View. Eligible photos are selected automatically, and only a limited number are shown per area.

Reporting Trail View photos

If a Trail View photo is incorrectly placed or needs to be reported for any reason, you can report it directly from the map:

  1. Click on the green dot in the route planner.
  2. Click on Suggest an edit in the sidebar.
  3. Choose the appropriate issue and select Submit feedback.

FAQ

Why are photos I didn't add appearing in my saved routes?

If there are photos available along your route, they are automatically displayed in the preview of your saved routes. These can include Trail View photos as well as visually appealing photos from public community activities to help you get a better sense of the trail.

These photos were taken on the trail and cannot be removed or edited. You also cannot add your own photos to planned routes, you can only add them to completed activities.

Why is a Trail View photo no longer available?

If you're seeing a message This picture is no longer available after opening a Trail View photo, this could be happening due to one of the following reasons:

  • The creator changed their profile's privacy settings.

  • The activity shown in the photo is no longer public.

  • The activity shown in the photo was deleted.

  • The photo is now part of a Privacy Zone.

How can I exclude my photos from the Trail View?

Photos taken in public activities on public profiles can be included in Trail View. If you do not want one of your photos to appear in Trail View, you can report the image to request its removal.

Note: Information about who took the photo and which activity it is associated with cannot be hidden.
