This article explains how to use the komoot app for Garmin after you've installed it and connected your accounts.

You'll learn how to access routes on your device, choose your navigation mode, send routes to your Garmin, update routes, use Live Sync during navigation, and adjust key settings.

Start navigation on your Garmin

After installing and connecting the Garmin komoot app, your saved routes will appear directly inside the app on your device.

  1. Open the komoot app on your Garmin device.
  2. Select one of your saved routes.
  3. Choose Start or Start Navigation, depending on your device.

Tip: You can also filter the routes by sport, date, and distance.

Choose how you navigate

If your device supports multiple navigation modes, you may be asked to choose between komoot navigation and Garmin navigation.

When starting navigation, choose the komoot map option. This opens komoot's navigation interface on your Garmin device and provides additional features, such as:

  • komoot maps and route details during navigation, including route warnings and Points of Interest
  • Live Sync updates and Live Tracking
  • Dual activity sync to both Garmin Connect and komoot
  • Auto re-routing recalculates a path back to your planned route if you leave it (internet connection required). Your original komoot route is not permanently changed.

Offline use: Download the route before starting navigation. A map area along your route is stored on the device. If you move far away from the route without an internet connection, map data outside this area may not load.

komoot Premium

Komoot maps on Garmin are a komoot Premium feature. Without Premium, navigation is limited to Garmin's interface.

Keep in mind
  • Runs inside the komoot app, not as a Garmin .fit course file.
  • Some Garmin-specific features may be unavailable in this mode.
  • Some komoot features may be limited depending on your device or subscription status.

When starting navigation, choose the Garmin option. A .fit course file is generated and saved to your device, and navigation runs through Garmin's standard interface using Garmin's own map data.

If no maps are installed on your Garmin device, the route may appear as a line on a plain background instead of on a detailed map.

  • Turn-by-turn navigation is calculated (or recalculated) by Garmin based on its own maps. This can alter the route compared to the original komoot version.
  • Course file is stored on the device like any other Garmin Course.

Note: Some newer devices support Live Sync updates in this mode. Updating the route requires pausing navigation, downloading the updated route, and then selecting the new course.

Keep in mind

  • No komoot map features, route warnings, or auto re-routing are available.
  • Navigation behavior depends on Garmin and device capabilities.
  • Not supported on devices without built-in navigation, such as Vivoactive or Venu devices.

Note: komoot maps are available on most supported devices. On some low-memory watches (such as Fenix 5/5s, Fenix 6/6s (non-pro edition), Forerunner 645, and others), only a basic route display may be available.

Send routes to your device (Live Sync)

The Send to device feature lets you instantly push a specific route from komoot to your Garmin and open it directly in the komoot app on your device.

The route appears in the app and will usually begin downloading automatically. Once downloaded, it's ready to start navigation — no need to search for it on your Garmin.

You can send routes from the Route planner, from your saved routes, or from any route you find in the app.

  1. Open the route you want to send and tap Navigate.
  2. Select Garmin.
  3. Open the komoot app on your Garmin device and confirm.

Tip: You can set a default navigation device in the komoot app by pressing the Navigation options button on one of your saved routes.

  1. Open the route you want to send and tap Navigate.
  2. If Garmin is your default navigation device, the route will be sent there.
  3. Open the komoot app on your Garmin device and confirm.

Tip: Keep the komoot app open on your Garmin to receive routes faster. If the app is closed, you may need to open it to accept the route.

Update routes on your Garmin

If you edit a route in komoot, the version already downloaded to your Garmin device will not update automatically.

If the route has not yet been downloaded, opening it in the komoot app on your Garmin will usually load the latest version.

To make sure you're using the updated version:

  1. Make your changes in komoot.
  2. Tap or click Navigate again, and select your Garmin device if prompted.
  3. Open the route in the komoot app on your Garmin and start navigation.

Update a route during navigation (Live Sync)

On supported devices, you can update a running route by editing it in komoot and sending the update to your Garmin without losing the recorded activity.

Note: Updating a running route is only possible when using komoot navigation. This is not available in Garmin navigation.

  1. Edit the route in komoot on your phone (or on the website).
  2. Select Navigate (or Navigate with Garmin, depending on your default navigation setting).
  3. Open the komoot app on your Garmin device and confirm Update when prompted.

Record activities with the komoot app

On supported devices, you can record activities directly using the Garmin komoot app.

Recording is independent of navigation. If you want to follow a route, start navigation on one of your saved routes instead.

Note: Recording availability and features depend on your Garmin model. An internet connection may be required on some devices.

Once finished, your activity can sync back to komoot, depending on your connection settings.

Adjust app settings

You can customize your navigation experience directly in the Garmin komoot app.

Note: These settings only apply when using komoot navigation on your Garmin device. Garmin's navigation and maps usually have their own separate settings.

To access the settings:

  1. Open the komoot app on your Garmin device.
  2. Scroll down and select Settings.

Depending on your device, you can adjust options such as:

  • Navigation mode – Set komoot or Garmin navigation as your default, or choose each time
  • Turn prompts or sound alerts – Enable or disable notifications
  • Map appearance – Switch between light and dark map colors
  • Stats – Choose which statistics are shown during navigation and adjust what appears on your data screens
  • Auto-rerouting – Automatically recalculates your route if you go off track and have an internet connection
