Highlights are community contributions that appear on the komoot map as recommended places and route segments. If you've discovered something worth sharing, you can create or contribute to Highlights to help others plan better routes.

Create Highlights

You can create a Highlight after experiencing a place or segment yourself:

  • After completing an activity, you are prompted in the app to create a Highlight before uploading your activity.
  • By editing a completed activity, you can also add Highlights later, both in the app and on the website. Learn how by editing a completed activity.
  • On the Create Highlight page, you can create a Highlight from any of your completed activities. You can access it on the website under New > Create Highlight.

When creating a Highlight, focus on places or segments you would genuinely recommend to others.

While creating a Highlight, you will first be asked to choose between Highlighting a Place or a Segment:

This is the default option chosen when creating a Highlight.

  1. Click or tap on the map where you'd like to place the Highlight to drop a pin.
  2. Confirm the position by pressing Create Highlight or Next, depending on the platform where you're creating it.
  3. Add the required information: A name, sport, a helpful tip and photos.
  4. Share the Highlight with the community by pressing Create Highlight.
  1. Select the Segment option while creating the Highlight, then tap or click on your route.
  2. Two pins will appear. Position them on your route to define the boundaries of the Segment Highlight.
  3. Confirm the position by pressing Create Highlight or Next, depending on the platform where you're creating it.
  4. Add the required information: A name, sport, a helpful tip and photos.
  5. Share the Highlight with the community by pressing Create Highlight.

Good Highlights:

  • Represent something special or useful, such as a great viewpoint, a scenic segment, a challenging trail, or a memorable stop along the way.
  • Have a clear, descriptive name.
  • Include relevant, high-quality photos taken on location.
  • Add helpful tips, for example, about timing, conditions, or what to expect.

Temporary situations, personal notes, or locations meant to be avoided are not suitable. Highlights should reflect lasting places or segments.

Contribute to existing Highlights

Once you have completed an activity, komoot may prompt you (before you upload it) to rate the Highlights you passed and, optionally, add a tip or photo.

You can also contribute later at any time by editing a completed activity.

If your activity passed existing Highlights, you can also rate and contribute to them from the community contributions page.

If there were no Highlights along your activity, you can create a new Highlight.

Edit or report Highlights

If you created a Highlight, you can edit its name and details at any time.
If you added photos or tips to a Highlight, you can edit or remove your own contributions. You can only edit or delete photos you personally added.

Some parts of a Highlight can't be edited directly. This includes the location of the Highlight or the mapped segment it refers to.

Manage and delete your Highlight photos

Photos you added to Highlights are listed in the Contributions area of your profile, often shown as a tile such as "X photos". To open and remove a photo you personally added:

  1. Tap or click the Highlight name (not the photo tile) to open the full Highlight page.
  2. Open the photo gallery at the top by tapping or clicking any image.
  3. Find your photo and tap or click the trash can icon to delete it.

If the gallery doesn't open from the photos tile, use this path instead:

  1. Tap Add post.
  2. Scroll down and tap the name of the Highlight you contributed to.
  3. Open the photo gallery at the top and delete your photo using the trash can icon.

If a Highlight is inaccurate, misplaced, or otherwise needs attention, you can suggest an edit directly from the Highlight:

  1. Open the Highlight
  2. Select Suggest an edit
  3. Choose the appropriate reason and submit your feedback

Suggested edits are reviewed and help keep Highlights accurate and useful for everyone.

FAQ

Why isn't my Highlight visible on the komoot map?

If you've created a Highlight but can't see it on the komoot map, this can happen for a few reasons:

  • Sport type: Only Highlights for sports that are supported in the route planner are shown on the map. This includes hiking, bike touring, mountain biking, road cycling, and running. Highlights created for other sport types aren't displayed.
  • Zoom level: To avoid clutter, only the most popular Highlights are shown when you're zoomed out. You may need to zoom in further to see less-visited Highlights.
  • Routability: If no routable paths are detected around a Highlight, it won't appear on the map. This is because the route planner can't route to locations without recognized trails.
  • Not recommended: Highlights with many negative ratings or few recommendations may be hidden. Highlights are meant to be inspiring recommendations from the community.

Duplicate Highlights: If the same Highlight is created multiple times, duplicates are merged into the oldest Highlight. Only the original Highlight remains visible on the map, while photos and tips from duplicates are added to it.
