Route warnings at a glance

Ferry Color.png

Ferry

This warning is shown on your route when you’ll need to take a ferry to cross a body of water. If you see this symbol, check ahead to find out when they’re running and how much your ticket will cost. You don’t want to be stranded or left waiting overnight for the next available trip!

Bridge Up Color.png
Movable bridge

This warning is shown when a segment of your route requires you to cross a movable bridge. These may only be operational during certain times of the day, so you should check ahead to make sure you can cross.

Off-grid

This warning is shown on all routes that include an off-grid segment. These are sections of route that don’t adhere to komoot’s known network of roads, streets or paths. During off-grid sections, you won’t be given any turn-by-turn voice navigation instructions, so be sure to check the map.

Restricted

This warning is shown on all routes that may include segments with temporary access restrictions (such as when your route passes through military training areas, reserves during hunting/breeding season, or areas prone to flooding). Entry may still be possible, but you should check ahead and read all signs as you approach.

  • Inform yourself about local regulations and seasonal access rights.
  • Respect local rules and regulations and follow the signs.

Unsuitable

This warning is shown on cycling routes when a section of your route goes over a surface that may be unsuitable for your sport. This could be a portion of trail that’s exceptionally sandy, unpaved or exposed. You may have to push or carry your bike during these sections.

Steps

This warning is shown on all planned cycling routes when a section goes up or down some steps. Naturally, you’ll need to carry your bike during these parts of your route. If your bike is particularly heavy, you may want to consider rerouting around these sections.

Dismount Color.png
Dismount

This warning is shown on cycling routes when cycling is not permitted during a section of your route, such as a pedestrianized zone in a city center or a forest road where riding is forbidden. You’ll need to dismount and push your bike during these parts of your ride.

  • Inform yourself about where cycling may be prohibited.
  • Always respect local rules and other trail/road users.
Steep Uphill Color.png
Steep hill

This warning is shown on cycling routes when a section of your route is incredibly steep. This warning is shown when a singletrack is steeper than 10% or when a road/larger track is steeper than 20%. You’ll most likely have to push your bike during these sections, or you can choose to route around them.

Danger warnings for mountaineering, hiking and running

Potentially Dangerous Color.png

 

Potentially dangerous terrain

This warning is shown on routes that comprise technical, difficult, or hazardous terrain. Specialist equipment and prior experience may be required. In particular, sections flagged as potentially dangerous may include:

  • Trails that are classified as T3 or T4.
  • Trails that are severely eroded, overgrown or may be impassable (due to fallen trees, for example).
Highly Dangerous Color.png
Highly dangerous terrain

This warning is shown on routes that comprise very technical, difficult, or hazardous terrain where severe injury or loss of life could occur without specialist equipment or prior experience. In particular, sections flagged as highly dangerous may include:

  • Hiking trails that are classified as T5 or above.
  • Via ferrata routes.

Danger warnings for cycling, gravel, road, mountain biking and enduro

Potentially dangerous terrain

This warning is shown on routes that comprise technical, difficult, or hazardous terrain. Specialist equipment and prior experience may be required. In particular, sections flagged as potentially dangerous may include:

  • Mountain bike trails classified as S4.
Highly Dangerous Color.png
Highly dangerous terrain

This warning is shown on routes that comprise very technical, difficult, or hazardous terrain where severe injury or loss of life could occur without specialist equipment or prior experience. In particular, sections flagged as highly dangerous may include:

  • Mountain bike trails classified as S5.
  • Hiking trails that are classified as T3 or above.
  • Terrain that is impassible to wheeled vehicles. This could be due to severe erosion, fallen trees or areas that are very overgrown.
