Komoot Android App: Dropping OpenGL ES 2.0 Support
To enhance your outdoor adventures with the komoot app on Android, we’re making some important updates. OpenGL ES 2.0, a standard for rendering graphics used on the Android platform, has been the backbone of our map rendering capabilities. Introduced with Android 2.2, OpenGL ES has since seen updates to versions 3.0, 3.1, and 3.2. However, not all devices support these newer versions, which is why we have continued to support OpenGL from version 2.0 onwards.
While maintaining support for OpenGL ES 2.0, we have faced a range of technical challenges and limitations. These issues are increasingly affecting our users who seek seamless experiences with our Android app. Therefore, we have decided to stop supporting Open GL ES after komoot Version 2024.30.1 onwards
How to Check If Your Device Is Affected
Follow these steps to determine if your device is impacted by this change:
- Open the komoot app.
- Tap the profile icon at the bottom of the screen to access your profile.
- Click the cogwheel icon in the top right corner.
- Select App Settings.
- Scroll to the bottom to see the App version number.
What This Means for You
Rest assured, you will still be able to use komoot as you always have. If you need to reinstall our app, you can still download version 2024.30.1 from the Play Store.
By focusing our support on more recent versions of OpenGL ES, we aim to provide a better, more reliable experience for all users. Thank you for your understanding and continued support as we strive to enhance your outdoor adventures with komoot.
