To help you find the best route, komoot creates custom route suggestions based on the most popular trails and Highlights from the komoot community. On komoot, these route recommendations are called ready-made routes. No matter if you want to save time when planning or explore a new place, you will always get smart suggestions for your selected sport in the Routes section. In this article you will learn how to find ready-made routes via the search, how you can recognize them and how they are generated.

How to find ready-made routes?

Using the search function in the Routes section or even scrolling through your personalized content in the Home feed, you will come across komoot's route recommendations (ready-made routes).

Tip: A step-by-step guide on how to find komoot ready-made routes via the search function in the app or via the web version is summarized here: Find route suggestions

Adapt ready-made routes

Since the ready-made routes are automatically created routes, it can happen that the routing leads e.g. along a busy road, although there is a better alternative. Therefore, we recommend viewing the route in advance and, if desired, to adjust it to your own needs by setting additional waypoints.

Tip: How to manage waypoints via the Route planner on the website, Android app or in the iOS app is explained in the linked articles.

How to recognize a ready-made route?

If you open a route and find the following note at the bottom of the page, then you can be sure it's a ready-made route: "Our route suggestions are based on thousands of activities that other people have done with komoot."

How are ready-made routes generated?

Ready-made routes are generated by an algorithm. They are based on a combination of popular Highlights (with many positive ratings and comments) and anonymized route data recorded by komoot users. As soon as komoot recognizes that a trail is often frequented and popular, a ready-made route is generated for the respective sport via this route. The ready-made routes are continuously improved based on further recorded routes. The continuous evaluation of Highlights and their tips also influences the improvement of the ready-made routes. If the OpenStreetMap data on which the komoot map is based changes, the ready-made routes are updated automatically.

Potential issues with ready-made routes

Since this is an automated process based on user-generated content, errors can occur. Some of the problems that may arise and how to fix them are described below.

Error in the map data

If a ready-made route uses a trail that no longer exists or is no longer accessible, you can enhance it by updating the map data from OpenStreetMap. This ensures that the paths will be displayed correctly on the komoot map in the future.

Spelling mistakes in the title

If you find a spelling mistake in the title of a ready-made route, it is most likely due to a typo in the Highlights that was used to generate the name. In this case, please find the Highlights linked in the route and help us improve our content by pointing it out to our editors. Here's how to do it: Request to edit a Highlights.

Missing information

To prepare for your route, you can click on the Highlights contained in the ready-made routes, in which you will find relevant warnings as well as additional information such as opening hours. The tips from the community also contain helpful information on local restrictions, for example.

If you have collected additional valuable information during a route, leave these in the respective Highlights as a tip to inform other users about it. This way, the community can also benefit from your experiences and the content is continuously improved.
