When you go to the app's map view or start a navigation, komoot uses your phone's compass to determine and display the direction. At 7 km/h or more, we switch to GPS mode and use your phone's GPS system to determine your direction. You can change these display modes manually by tapping the directional icon in the lower right corner.

iOS

There are three modes on the iOS app:

  • Compass needle full - the map is oriented north and centered.
  • Compass needle empty - the map is oriented north but not centered.
  • Compass needle with line - map is in compass direction (automatically activated when moving at more than 7 km/h)

If your direction is not displayed correctly in one or all of the settings, please check the following points:

  • Your device has a compass?
  • The location services are activated for the komoot app? (Settings > Komoot > Location > set to "When using the app")
  • The compass calibration and motion calibration & distance is activated? (Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services > please activate Compass Calibration and Motion Calibration & Distance)
  • Open the compass app once to see if it asks you to calibrate. If yes, then please follow on-screen instructions
  • Are the latest versions of iOS and the komoot app installed on the iPhone?
  • Try restarting the app.
  • Have you tried restarting your phone? (The GPS chip will be restarted as well)
  • Are there any magnetic objects nearby when using the app? (e.g. extra battery, bag with magnetic closure)

Android

There are two modes on the Android app:
