Komoot currently supports eight different sports types for planning, focused on hiking and cycling sports. It would be great if it were possible to plan for other types of sports, such as horse riding, or water sports and winter sports, such as kayaking, swimming, skiing, snowshoeing and so on.

Status

The komoot route planner is based on a complicated algorithm, that takes a lot of data into consideration. We use the mapping data provided by OpenStreetMap as the basis of this. It provides us information about way types, surface types and the accessibility of certain roads which we use to recommend Tours for hiking and cycling sports type that can be tailored to different levels of experience.

Plans

We do not currently plan on expanding the sports types that we offer, as every sports type has its own unique challenges and needs:

  • Skiing is dependent on the weather conditions and local trail building, as well as elevation. Conditions can change rapidly and become unsafe in the snow.
  • Water sports need information about currents, depths, temperature and seasonal changes.
  • Families with strollers and little children, dogs, elderly people or even people with disabilities need to be able to rely on the surface types, elevation, and the width of the paths available.
  • Horse riding access depends on local restrictions, accurate surfaces, and information about car traffic.

We always strive to provide the best possible planning experience for everyone who relies on komoot. Our current focus is to ensure that the sports types we do offer are as accurate and as reliable as possible.

Workaround

If you'd primarily like to use the community features and exchange with other people on komoot, you can still record Tours with a similar sport and after saving the Tour, choose one of the following sports within the edit section of the completed Tour:

  • Climbing
  • Downhill MTB
  • Unicycling
  • Cross-country Skiing
  • Nordic Walking
  • Skating
  • Alpine Skiing
  • Ski Touring
  • Snowboarding
  • Snowshoeing
  • Sledding
  • Other

This way you can share the tour, with the desired sport with your friends, as well as create highlights and contribute to these sports.

If you already know specific areas and routes well enough that you can plan them or are willing to cross-check your route with other sources, you can plan these Tours off-grid, just to have access to them on komoot as well. More information about off-grid planning can be found here: Off-grid Tour planning outside of komoot’s routing network. Please note that you would still have to choose the wrong sports type in order to be able to save these.
