Manage your privacy zones
You can set privacy zones on komoot to hide private locations, such as your home or work address, in your completed activities. This lets you share activities without revealing the exact start or end points.
Note: Privacy zones can only be managed on the website, not in the mobile apps.
How privacy zones work
- Privacy zones hide the start and/or end points of completed activities that fall within them. Only you can see the hidden parts of the activity.
- Privacy zones are not applied if you only pass through the location during an activity.
- Privacy zones do not affect route data or your activity statistics.
- Privacy zones apply only to completed activities, not to planned routes.
- Privacy zones are randomly generated polygons, making the location harder to identify.
Privacy zones are applied retroactively. If you have older completed activities that start or end within a newly created privacy zone, those points will automatically be hidden from view.
Any privacy zones you remove will also reveal the start or end points of previously completed activities that begin or end within those zones.
Create a privacy zone
To create a privacy zone, go to your Account Settings:
- Click on Privacy
- Go to the Privacy Zones section > Manage privacy zones
- Choose Create new privacy zone
- Find the location you want to hide, give it a name, then Save it.
Tip: You can create multiple privacy zones.
Edit a privacy zone
After creating a privacy zone, you can rename it or regenerate it to create a new random polygon. The polygon's shape can't be edited manually.
If you regenerate a privacy zone, the new shape is applied automatically to all past and future completed activities.
Note: If you want to change the location of a privacy zone, you will need to delete it, then create a new one.
Delete a privacy zone
You can delete a privacy zone at any time by pressing Delete. Once deleted, the location will become visible again in all affected completed activities.
Sharing activities with privacy zones
If you share an activity via a link or with your followers, the starting and/or ending points covered by a privacy zone remain hidden.
However, if you tag or invite other komoot users as participants in an activity, they will see the complete activity data, including starting and ending points, even if a privacy zone covers those locations.
