You can import and export GPS files. This allows you to use them for navigation and planning on komoot, or export them for use on external devices.

Note: Only one route or activity can be imported or exported at a time.

Exporting komoot routes

Routes and completed activities can be exported from komoot via the app or the website as GPX files.

Note: GPX exports include only the route geometry (GPS coordinates). Waypoints added during planning, voice navigation, and komoot maps are not included.

Attention: To export a GPX file, the region where the route starts must be unlocked. If it is not, komoot will show which region is required.

  1. Go to your Profile > Saved routes or Completed activities
  2. Select the route you want to export
  3. Click Download GPX file

Note: The GPX file is usually saved in the Downloads folder. The exact location depends on your operating system and storage settings. For more information, please refer to this section.

  1. Go to your Profile > Saved routes or Completed activities
  2. Select the route you want to export
  3. Tap Download GPX file

Note: On Android, the GPX file is usually saved automatically to your Downloads folder. On iOS, you may see a prompt to save the file or open it with another app. For more information, please refer to this section.

Import GPS files

Saved routes and completed activities can be imported to komoot via the app or the website as GPX, TCX, or FIT files.

Attention: KML and NMEA files are not supported for upload to komoot.

Import as Saved Route

Importing a file as a saved route lets you edit it to suit your needs and use it for navigation later.

  1. Go to your Profile > Saved routes
  2. Click Import a GPS file and select a file from your device.
  3. Select Import to Plan a Route
  4. Adjust the sport type
  5. Save the route, then choose the name

Note: If parts of your route deviate from known ways, before you can save the route, you'll be asked to choose one of the following options:

  • Stick to original route: komoot will save the route as-is, and off-grid sections will be inserted at the points where the imported route deviates from known ways. The navigation will be less accurate.
  • Match route to known ways: komoot will automatically replan parts of your route along the best alternative ways. The route won't be matched exactly, but navigation may be more reliable.

After selecting one of the options above, you can also click on Review Route to make manual adjustments to your route immediately.

komoot Premium

Premium users can choose to import a long route (7h+) as a multi-day Route.

  • Import as single-stage Route: Import this Route as one long stage (from point A to point B) for navigating the whole route in one go.
  • Import as multi-day Route: Import this Route as a multi-day Route and let komoot define the most optimal day-stages for you.
  1. Go to your Profile > Saved routes
  2. Tap Import > Import a file (GPX, FIT or TCX) and select a file from your device.
  3. Tap Open File, then choose the sport type
  4. If you'd like, adjust the route, then Save it and choose the name

Note: If parts of your route deviate from known ways, before you can adjust and save your route, you'll be asked to choose one of the following options:

  • Stick to original route: komoot will save the route as-is, and off-grid sections will be inserted at the points where the imported route deviates from known ways. The navigation will be less accurate.
  • Match route to known ways: komoot will automatically replan parts of your route along the best alternative ways. The route won't be matched exactly, but navigation may be more reliable.

Import as Completed Activity

Importing a file as a completed activity will display it with your other activities in your profile.

  1. Go to your Profile > Completed activities
  2. Click Import a GPS file and select a file from your device.
  3. Select Import as Activity
  4. Adjust the sport type, start date and activity visibility
  5. Import Activity, then choose the name
  1. Go to your Profile > Completed activities
  2. Tap Import > Import a file (GPX, FIT or TCX) and select a file from your device.
  3. Tap Save File, then choose the date and sport type

You can add any additional details or make adjustments once saved.

FAQ

Can I download several routes at once?

Bulk downloading of GPS data is currently not supported. Downloading routes individually is recommended.

How do I transfer a Route planned on the website to my phone?

komoot automatically syncs all content between the website and your mobile app. Please ensure you're logged in to the correct account.

How do I transfer a route to Strava?

There is no direct integration between komoot and Strava. To transfer a route, export it from komoot as a GPX file (steps above), then upload that file to Strava manually.

My GPX file is too large to import — what can I do?

komoot has a file size limit for GPX imports. If your file is too large, try splitting it into smaller sections using a free GPX editing tool, then import each section separately as a saved route. Very long routes (such as multi-day tours) can also be imported as a multi-day route if you have komoot Premium.

Under which file path is the GPX file stored during export?

The location can depend on the device you are using, the operating system, and custom storage settings. If you are not sure where the file was saved, here are some tips:

  1. Search for the file. Use the search function on your computer to locate the file by entering the route's name in the search field.
  2. Check the default folder. Go to storage settings to verify which folder is used for saving downloaded files.

My device shows off-route warnings for a route imported from a GPX file

When you import a GPX file and choose Match route to known ways, komoot adjusts parts of the route to follow recognized paths. This can shift the start or end point, or reroute certain segments. If you then export that route and navigate it on a GPS device (such as a Suunto or Garmin), the device may show off-route warnings because the exported track no longer aligns with the path you are on.

To avoid this, import the original file using Stick to original route instead. This preserves the original GPS coordinates exactly. After importing, you can open the route in the route planner to manually adjust any waypoints that need correcting.
